Moonrise Kingdom sets loose the child in us, in the most phantasmagorical sense, as we watch the sprightly story take over our hearts. For this most accomplished work of his, Wes Anderson, chose an impressive troupe of characters, of different ages to delicately craft the plot. I believe, that the protagonists, Sam and Suzy are absolute manifestations of our selves, mushroomed in a world where learning could lead to liberation, and happiness. Well, setting aside the idyllic setting, and coming back to the world that exists. .it is extremely unfortunate that our failure to follow our dreams, gets us the prize of life :"Adulthood". Enmeshed in the complexities of contemporary life, the Darwinian survival skills give us jelly feet. The movie tackles all of it, and asks us to return to where we all started from.
Yes, you often start watching with your Freudian "Superego" guarding your societal, realistic, and analogical mind, only to end up, watching the entire movie from the eyes of a child. The story makes you reminiscent of your own summertime, with all the patience in the world, with things to invent, play and fight for. The dreamlike time when you could indulge in luxuries of siestas, book-reading sessions, painting, and all the hobbies you could think of, with no school to attend.Oh! do you remember the loveliness of the shapes of crayon? The sight of colorful butterflies? The unforgettable fairy tales and comics? Once part of everybody's childhood, now having a calculated value in our lives : the trees, the sun, garden and toys, the games and rules, the games without rules, the adventures invented, played and lived.
While the older characters, Captain Sharp and Scouts Master Randy Ward are strong, generous and well sketched personalities, who often epitomized for qualities one craves for, play their part exactingly well in supporting the confident young emotions. The love kindled by a consistent exchange of letters between the two twelve year old characters, who barely know each other, have another truth to reveal. Scarcely understood, it is the joy of finding a connection with someone, who truly makes you feel good about yourself, And the feeling being pristine and flawless, gently subdues all other lessons learnt and to be learnt. Honestly, their powerful belief will take your sensibilities to a new height.
The message comes a full circle with unbroken and uncovered truth, which we are subconsciously are aware of, dealing with and fighting against. The movie with its artificial yet beautiful set-up explores and presents the rueful complexity of adult sentiments. As adults, we have left behind the illogical, naive, ludicrous, and other purposeless pursuits. Walking towards learning, step by step, we dissatisfy, pain and damage ourselves more. Well, we really know what purposeful is, don't we.
Of course, yes.
Yet, inspite of making so informed, careful, and profitable choices, don't we ever wonder how wonderful it could be, if we never knew what we know today?
The movie is astonishingly grandeur in its tone, style and thoughtfulness. It is now running unrivaled in my memory lanes. The brilliant musical choices blend with every frame so well, and takes it up to a level where you can actually enter the movie, and play your part. And after all, no matter what I say, your engagement with the movie will tell a different story.I am really eager to read about your "connect". So tell me.
